Description
Emils Delins was born in Riga, Latvia in 1921. He fled his homeland during the Soviet occupation and emigrated to Australia after the Second World War. In 1949 he established the Latvian newspaper "Austrālijas Latvietis” (the Australian Latvian) - a weekly newspaper that is still published today. In 1979 Emils Delins was appointed honorary vice-consul of Latvia in Australia, and served as honorary consul general of Latvia in Australia and New Zealand from 1982-2004. He was one of the most prominent and politically active members of the Latvian community in Australia who always believed that one day Latvia would regain independence - as it did in 1991 after 50 years of Soviet Occupation. Ilona Berzins's book gives an insight into the life of this patriotic individual, his contribution to Latvian life and culture in Australia, and his fight to reverse the Australian government’s decision in 1974 to recognize as legal the Soviet Union’s rule in the Baltic States. Emils Delins passed away on February 21, 2004 in Melbourne, Australia. The book is in Latvian.
